Brasserie La Banque: A Downtown Gem I Have Been Sleeping On

After the initial hype in late 2021 when this gem of a restaurant opened, I somehow missed making it in. Boy, do I regret all of the missed opportunities! I went into this meal with measured expectations and left genuinely impressed.

Parking is the usual downtown exercise in patience, but street parking is doable if you give yourself time. Once inside, the space immediately charms. The converted bank building is elegant and thoughtfully done, with architectural character that feels intentional rather than trendy. Tables are small, as is the downtown norm, but the room is not overly loud and conversation is easy, which already puts Brasserie La Banque ahead of many of its peers.

Service That Sets the Tone

Service was a major reason this evening worked as well as it did. Joshua, our server, was exceptional from start to finish. He was warm, calm, and clearly experienced, offering recommendations when asked and stepping back when not needed. He was careful and proactive about allergies and attentive without hovering, which is a balance too few servers manage.

Mocktail options were genuinely thoughtful rather than an afterthought, and coffee service at the end of the meal featured excellent French press coffee, which felt like a small but meaningful sign of care.

Starters That Delivered Real Joy

Both appetizers were excellent.

The steak tartare was well seasoned and balanced, with just the right horseradish kick to wake everything up without overwhelming the beef. While I would have preferred bread to the kettle chips served alongside it, I made quick work of the tartare with a spoon and zero regrets. The flavor was spot on.

The escargot was deeply satisfying, especially after a disappointing version elsewhere last month. These were tender and bathed in a delicate sauce of garlic, shallot, Pernod, and fines herbes. The tarragon was perfectly calibrated, present but not dominant, which is no small feat. The warm baguette served with it was ideal for soaking up every last bit of that sauce. This dish made me genuinely happy.

Seafood Mains With a Clear Vision

We opted for seafood mains, and while both were thoughtfully composed, one clearly stole the show.

The scallops with cauliflower, egg, capers, and garlic were well executed and flavorful, though I found myself wishing for a touch of acidity to lift the dish. It felt as though a finishing splash of citrus might have been forgotten. Even so, the dish showed intention and a clear understanding of how its components should work together.

Then there was the tilefish. My date ordered it. I took one bite. I immediately informed him that we would be switching plates. He protested briefly and then surrendered.

The tilefish with sunchoke, black truffle, and hazelnut tapenade in a brown butter sauce was beautifully composed. It balanced crunch, sweetness, and savory depth while remaining delicate enough to let the perfectly cooked fish shine. Nothing overwhelmed. Everything belonged. I ate the entire dish and informed my date that this was his penance for being ten minutes late to our reservation.

A Brussels Sprout Revelation

On a whim, and at Joshua’s urging, we ordered the Brussels sprouts with Roquefort. This turned out to be one of the most surprising and successful dishes of the night.

These sprouts were not charred into bitterness. Some were crisp, others tender, and they were paired with apple, bacon, pecans, sherry, and a restrained amount of blue cheese that complemented rather than smothered the vegetables. The balance was excellent. This is now my top pick for Brussels sprouts in the city. Had I met the chef, I would have shaken his hand for this dish alone.

Desserts Worth the Indulgence

I was already full, but the crepe cake featuring pistachio and red currant made ordering dessert unavoidable. I ate half and was genuinely sad I could not finish it. It was rich, layered, and beautifully lifted by the tartness of the currants. I made my date finish the rest and declared it repayment for the tilefish I stole.

His pumpkin speculoos tart with brown sugar, chantilly, and Biscoff caramel was also excellent. It was refined, balanced, and deeply satisfying without tipping into excess. It was everything pumpkin pie wishes it could be.

Value That Matters

One final note deserves emphasis. Given the quality of ingredients, the level of execution, and the caliber of service, the prices here are exceedingly reasonable by downtown Charleston standards. Nothing felt inflated or aspirational for the sake of it. The meal felt fairly priced, which only added to the overall sense of ease and goodwill we left with.

Final Thoughts

This meal exceeded expectations in every way that matters. The pacing was relaxed even during a busy Restaurant Week service. The food showed thought, restraint, and confidence. Service was consistently excellent.

Brasserie La Banque is doing something increasingly rare downtown. It offers a polished, enjoyable dining experience that values conversation, hospitality, and flavor over flash. I left pleasantly surprised and very much looking forward to returning.
