Dim Sum Great Food (I’m Sorry, I Couldn’t Help Myself)

Yes, that title is a terrible pun. I apologize immediately and without reservation. Now that we have that out of the way, let’s talk about how good this place actually is.
Chef Loong Dim Sum & Soup Dumplings has taken over the old Li’s spot in the strip mall on Savannah Highway and has been absolutely packed ever since. For good reason. This is authentic Chinese food served in a casual, welcoming setting, and it has quickly become one of my most frequent recommendations in Charleston.
I have eaten here probably ten times already. I have brought large groups. I have dragged friends who then thanked me profusely. This restaurant fills a real gap in the local dining scene, and it does so confidently.
Why People Keep Coming Back
The obvious draw is the dim sum and soup dumplings, which are still novel enough in Charleston to feel exciting. They are also very well executed. My personal favorites are the Sichuan chili wontons and the pan seared pork dumplings, but there truly is not a bad choice on the dim sum list. Everything arrives hot, well seasoned, and clearly made with care.
This is the kind of menu where you point, order too much, and then happily eat every last bite.
Do Not Skip the Appetizers
The appetizers deserve their own attention. The scallion pancakes are unusually crispy and deeply satisfying, with the right balance of chew and crunch. The cucumber salad is a must order, especially if you plan to dive into the Sichuan dishes. It provides a cooling, refreshing counterpoint to the spice and keeps the meal feeling balanced rather than overwhelming.
The soups are rich and full of depth, though I confess I rarely order them anymore. That is not a knock on quality. It is self preservation. I want room for what comes next.
Where the Menu Really Shines
The wok entrees are where Chef Loong truly separates itself.
The Peking duck is the best I have had in South Carolina, full stop. The skin is crisp, the meat is flavorful, and it scratches an itch that usually requires a much larger city.
Chef Loong’s beef is something I order every single time I come. The Mongolian beef is spicy, sweet, and deeply satisfying, with a balance that keeps you reaching back for another bite.

My favorite dish on the entire menu is what I affectionately call the adult chicken nuggets. Laziji chili chicken. These are small fried chicken bites coated in peppers and Sichuan chilis, and the spice does not just hit. It dances. It tingles. It builds. It is complex, joyful heat that rewards rather than punishes. I crave this dish.

The mapo tofu is also a ten out of ten for those who can tolerate real heat. It is bold, assertive, and unapologetic.
For diners who prefer a gentler approach, the noodle dishes are solid and approachable, with less heat but plenty of flavor. There is something here for every comfort level.

Practical Notes That Matter
This place is popular for a reason, and the line can be out the door at opening. Thankfully, they now take reservations through Yelp, which is a true blessing and makes group dining far easier.
The setting is casual and unpretentious. This is not about white tablecloths or ceremony. It is about excellent food served with confidence.
Final Thoughts
Chef Loong Dim Sum & Soup Dumplings has become one of my most returned to restaurants in Charleston, and that says everything. It is authentic, generous, flavorful, and consistently excellent.
Bad pun aside, this is great food. Truly dim sum great food.
