The James: Where Everybody Knows Your Name, and Your Steak Order Too
I have dined at The James well over a dozen times since it opened. Family dinners. Girls’ nights out. Business meals. Casual celebrations. It has proven itself across contexts, which is harder to do than people realize.
A Space That Actually Works
Parking is plentiful behind the restaurant, which immediately lowers blood pressure. Inside, the space is large, comfortable, and thoughtfully laid out. The bar is lively and energetic, but it is set apart from the dining room rather than bleeding into it. That separation is crucial.
Dining tables are spaced far enough apart that conversation is easy and private. You can talk. You can listen. You can conduct business or catch up with friends without shouting across the table. This alone makes The James an ideal choice for both social and professional dinners.
Service That Feels Like Home
The service team is practiced, confident, and genuinely warm. Regular guests are treated like old friends, which gives the restaurant its unmistakable Cheers-meets-elevated-dining vibe. It is comforting without ever feeling fawning.
Staff often remember drink preferences or how someone likes their steak cooked. That kind of institutional memory builds loyalty and makes the restaurant feel lived in rather than transactional.
Steaks That Keep Me Coming Back
The steaks at The James are consistently well executed and very reasonably priced compared to downtown. As a filet person, I am particular. I want a hard crust, a tender interior, and the cook nailed to temperature.

The James delivers this reliably. The filet finished with garlic butter has been cooked exactly to my taste many times, which is not an accident. It is repetition and care.
Starters That Do Their Job Well
The PEI mussels are a generous, shareable portion and consistently tasty. The preparation changes seasonally, which keeps them interesting without straying from what works.
The tuna tartare with horseradish is another reliable favorite. Clean, balanced, and satisfying.
One of the quiet success stories here is the updated fried shrimp appetizer. It has been refined into a standout, with just enough kick, proper seasoning, and restraint with sauce. No excessive salt. No heavy-handed spice. No mayo overload.
Salads and soups are always solid. The peach salad in summer is my favorite, and the winter pear salad has been a hit with every guest I have brought. The mushroom soup and French onion soup are popular, though I usually skip them because I am saving room for steak.
A Note on the Salmon
My mother is particularly fond of the Scottish salmon. One important note for diners. The kitchen will default to cooking the salmon thoroughly unless you specify otherwise. This works well for those who prefer it well done, as my mother does. If you want it cooked differently, simply say so. They are happy to accommodate.
A Neighborhood Restaurant That Gets It Right
The James offers something increasingly rare in Charleston. A comfortable, welcoming restaurant where good food is served by people who care, at prices that allow you to come back regularly.
It is an excellent alternative to downtown dining, especially for those who value ease, consistency, and conversation. This is a place built for people who live here, not just those passing through.
The James fills a vital role, and it does so with confidence, warmth, and skill.
