The Royal Tern: The Kind of Place Locals Try to Hide from the Tourists

There are restaurants you recommend and then there are restaurants you rely on and love.
The Royal Tern is one of the places we locals cherish. It is a family-owned, locally loved spot that has quietly built one of the most consistent and satisfying dining experiences on Johns Island.
Let's start with the practical realities. Parking is easy. The space is comfortable. The room feels lived-in in the best way. It's the kind of place where you see the same faces over and over because the locals come back again and again. We do that because we leave happy every time.
The service is consistently strong being attentive, friendly, and grounded in the kind of professionalism that does not need to show off. The bar program is solid, with thoughtful cocktails for those who want them and reliable iced tea and sodas for those who do not. They don't have much a mocktail game but as long as the tea is fresh and flowing I am not about to complaint about it. This is a place that understands its audience and takes care of them with quiet competence.
The menu is seafood-forward, seasonal, and confidently reliable.
The appetizers are always a strong place to start. The PEI mussels are non-negotiable and should be ordered every time. They are served in a wine, leek, and garlic cream sauce. They are rich without being heavy and perfectly balanced. Make sure you ask for a spoon and extra bread. You will want every last drop of that sauce. Plan to share with the table unless you are ordering this as your main. *Note these are as good as the OG PEI Mussels at Rue de Jean when Rue de Jean was still wonderful.
The tuna and salmon tartare are also consistently excellent, with seasonal variations keeping it interesting without losing its core appeal.
And then there is the main event. I should probably explore more of the menu. I do not. Because when the whole flounder is available, I order it every time. It is, quite simply, the best whole fish I have had in the area. The preparation changes regularly, which keeps it from ever feeling repetitive. On this last visit, it was served with a saffron and chive beurre blanc alongside root vegetables. The fish was perfectly cooked, the flesh delicate and clean, and the sauce brought just enough richness to complement without overwhelming. It is the kind of dish you keep picking at until there is nothing left, and then wish there were more.

My mother, who reliably orders scallops whenever she sees them, remains equally loyal here. The current preparation with saffron risotto, green peas, pea shoots, sofrito, fried capers, and roasted red pepper emulsion was exceptional. They serve perfectly cooked scallops, thoughtful composition, and layers of flavor that came together beautifully. She was kind enough to share one bite (you know, just so I could credibly tell you about them) and then guarded the rest of her plate carefully.

My daughter went in a different direction with the yellowfin tuna, crusted in peanuts and served with fried rice, bean sprouts, green peas, curry peanuts, prik nam pla, scallions, and house chili sauce. It was vibrant, well-balanced, and packed with flavor without losing control of the dish. It was also served perfectly to temp.

And then there is dessert. Sydney Frey is doing something special as a world class pastry chef. Her menu changes weekly, and there is a sense of creativity and care that carries through every plate. It is always worth saving room, even when you've stuffed your face with delicious fish.
And that brings us back to why this place has a special place in my heart. The Royal Tern does not elevate form over substance. It is not trying to be the loudest or the newest or the flashiest. It is simply doing the work. They are doing it consistently, thoughtfully, and well. In a dining scene that can sometimes feel driven by novelty and flashy social media, that kind of reliability is not just refreshing, it is invaluable. That is exactly why this remains my favorite restaurants on Johns Island.
