I love Charleston. I love this city, its people, its rhythms, and most especially its food. I eat out often, thoughtfully, and with intention. I pay for my meals. I take notes. I go back. And when something is wonderful, I celebrate it with my whole chest.

I am also a fat, inactive lawyer who does not mess around. That combination turns out to be useful at the table.

Lex Loci Delicious exists because dining well is about more than trends, hype, or how hard a reservation is to get. It is about execution. It is about hospitality. It is about whether a kitchen understands what it is trying to say and has the discipline to say it clearly. It is about whether a restaurant respects the diner enough to care how the meal lands.

I write as a serious diner, not an influencer and not a cheerleader. I am not chasing free meals or soft invitations. I care about flavor, balance, restraint, and generosity. I care about whether the fish is fresh, whether the sauce makes sen

se, whether the service notices when something is wrong and knows how to fix it. I care about whether non-drinkers are treated as full participants in the experience and whether comfort, pacing, and ease are considered part of hospitality rather than afterthoughts.

Charleston has an extraordinary food scene. It also has a tendency to reward ambition over execution and vibe over substance. This journal is an attempt to slow things down and look carefully at what actually happens at the table. Some meals are magical. Some are disappointing. Many are somewhere in between. All are worth examining honestly.

Praise here is earned. Criticism is specific. I am not interested in cruelty, but I am also not interested in pretending that everything is wonderful when it is not. Restaurants work too hard, and diners spend too much, for vague compliments or mushy thinking to be helpful to anyone.

If you are a diner who cares about food that tastes good, service that feels human, and restaurants that take their craft seriously, you are in the right place. If you disagree with me, that is cool too. Thoughtful disagreement is part of loving a food community.
