OK Donna: A Stylish Crowd-Pleaser That Plays It Safe and is Just OK

OK Donna is one of those perpetually busy Upper King restaurants that seems to always have a crowd hovering nearby waiting for a table. Honestly, I understand why. It is approachable, energetic, easy to get to, and importantly for downtown Charleston, has its own parking lot. That alone earns goodwill. The inside is extremely dark and tables are packed tightly together, but there is also outdoor seating that is much more pleasant when the weather cooperates.

The service leans young and eager. The staff may not have the polished precision of Charleston’s more formal dining rooms, but they are warm, attentive, and clearly trying hard to keep the room moving smoothly.

The bar menu is solid, though non-alcoholic options are somewhat limited.

The meal started well with focaccia that hit the ideal texture balance: crisp exterior, fluffy interior, and deeply satisfying while hot. Paired with the meatballs in porcini gravy, it became one of the better bites of the evening. The meatballs were rich, savory, and comforting, and frankly we all wished there had been more gravy left on the plate to drag the focaccia through.

Then came the cacio e pepe gnocchi, which was the clear disappointment of the night. There was almost no sauce, no noticeable pepper, and very little flavor overall. The gnocchi themselves were soft and properly cooked, but the dish felt unfinished, almost as if the kitchen forgot the final seasoning step entirely.

The malfadine carbonara recovered some momentum. Richer, properly sauced, and built around a generous use of quality guanciale that delivered a strong bacon-forward flavor. Not revolutionary, but satisfying.

The chicken Milanese was another success in its own very Upper King way. A giant crispy slab of chicken breast topped with Caesar salad that felt less like refined Italian cooking and more like the perfect thing to absorb cocktails after a night out downtown. And honestly, there is value in understanding exactly what your audience wants.

Dessert leaned heavy but enjoyable. The hazelnut French toast with vanilla ice cream was rich, indulgent, and probably best shared unless you are fully committing to the experience.

That really sums up OK Donna. This is not destination Italian dining. It is not trying to redefine pasta or transport you to Rome. It is a lively, attractive, approachable restaurant serving decent food in a high-energy atmosphere at relatively reasonable downtown prices. Some dishes work much better than others, but nothing about the evening felt careless. Just safe.

Would I go back? Sure. Would I fight for a reservation months in advance? Probably not. But for a casual dinner with friends, reliable parking, earnest service, and a few genuinely tasty dishes, it does exactly what it needs to do. It is OK for sure.
